I Edición Arquitectura con Eñe - Piedras del Arte Awards 2016

The Institutional Winery of La Grajera is based in La Rioja, Spain´s top wine region.  It is close to Logroño town and the Camino de Santiago (St. James´s Way).

Designed by Virai Arquitectos, it opened in 2011.

A calm and contemporary building that blends harmoniously with the natural surroundings: vineyards, olive groves, a lake and the forest.

It has won a special mention in the “I Edición Arquitectura con Eñe - Piedras del Arte Awards” which aims to recognize the use of natural stone in architecture.

Amongst the different building materials used, the NATURAL STONE FAÇADE stands out and welcomes the visitor upon arrival.  Built on a hill, the stone facade contributes to the harmonic insertion into the landscape and minimizes the visual impact of the building.

To protect them from the weather, the production and fermentation areas are underground, sheltered by the hill.  The natural stone used in the façade strengthens the thermal qualities of the building.

For the stone façade, close to 1,700 sqm of slabs/ashlars were supplied and then dressed onsite.  It is made of DORADA URBION SANDSTONE, supplied by ARENISCAS STONE.

Sandstone was formed a hundred and twenty million years ago, during the Lower Cretaceous period, when the Earth was criss-crossed by large rivers that dragged with them the sandy particles produced by the erosion of the oldest rock formations that had appeared in the massifs.

These sediments accumulated over the years in riverbeds in deposits of varying thickness and, subsequently compacted and then consolidated, forming what we now call sandstone.

DORADA URBION is a medium grained sandstone, predominantly BUFF in colour, where quartz is predominant. There are also small amounts of micas that show as tiny shiny spots on the surface, as well as oxide-hydroxides that create small veins. It has unequalled technical properties & aesthetic qualities, exceptional durability and it is low maintenance.

Quarried in Vilviestre del Pinar near Burgos (Spain) by ARENISCAS STONE. The quarry is worked all year round.  Blocks are on average 2600 x 1500 x 1400 mm.  The block is then brought to our factory, situtated only a few yards away from the quarry, for further processing into slabs/ashlars and cut to size.
